Method 1: Dry Bending with 1/4-inch High Flex Board

For arches with a radius greater than 24 inches, use 1/4-inch flexible drywall installed perpendicular to the framing studs. Fasten with 1-1/4" fine-thread drywall screws spaced every 6 inches O.C.

Method 2: Wet Sponging for Tighter Radii (12-inch to 24-inch)

Lightly mist both faces with a spray bottle or sponge. Allow moisture to penetrate the core for 15 minutes until the board flexes without resistance. Always allow wet drywall to dry completely before taping.

Method 3: Back-Kerf Cutting for Ultra-Tight Curves (< 12-inch)

For tight bullnose arches, score parallel lines across the backside paper every 1 to 2 inches using a utility knife. Snap the gypsum core along each score line and fasten to the wooden ribs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common carpentry, masonry, and geometric questions regarding arch calculations and construction layout.

Q1 What thickness of drywall is best for curved arches?

1/4-inch High Flex gypsum board is the industry gold standard. It bends dry down to a 24-inch radius, and bends wet down to a 12-inch radius. For heavy-duty jambs, install two laminated layers of 1/4-inch drywall to achieve a rigid 1/2-inch thickness.

Q2 How do you wet sponge drywall for tight curves?

Sponge clean warm water evenly onto both paper faces of the drywall strip. Allow water to soak into the gypsum core for 10 to 15 minutes until pliable, then clamp and fasten along the curved framing ribs.
