The Gardener's Two-Pin String Method

Based on the geometric definition of an ellipse: the sum of distances from any point on the curve to the two focal points ($F_1$ and $F_2$) is always constant and equals the total opening span ($W$).

  4. Pull pencil taut inside loop and sweep the full ellipse.
Method 2: Circles (R < 6 Ft)

  1. Take a straight 1x2 wood strip longer than radius $R$.
  2. Drill pivot screw hole at one end.
  3. Drill snug pencil hole exactly distance $R$ away.
  4. Set pivot at center point mark and swing smooth arc.
